After all the doubts about stadiums being ready and protests at the cost, the World Cup has started in Brazil. As expected, the opening ceremony was a feast of colour with lots of music, including a performance of the competition's official song. But, even though the crowd in the stadium at the opening seemed to swing along, as Keith Adams reports, the song has struck some discordant notes among the locals.
At the opening ceremony, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull and Claudia Leitte sang We Are One on the football-shaped podium in the centre of the stadium. There were sequins, there were folk costumes, there were Brazilian flags. Brazilians are passionate about their music, but this isn't their music. We Are One took a beating on the country's local and social media when it was released last month. Why, they lamented, were a Cuban American rapper Pitbull, and a New York Puerto Rican Jennifer Lopez given centre stage, singing in English and Spanish, while their own Claudia Leitte sang for just 14 seconds in Portuguese towards the end of the song? "And it's not very good," they said. "Cliche, Latin touches over a Caribbean soccer beat not even BossaNova." The cry went up on Twitter, "It's not too late to use Waka Waka."
